Impact Windows in North Florida: Do You Really Need Them?
Code requires them on the coast and not inland, but insurance credits, security and quiet make the case almost everywhere. Here’s how to decide.

Ask ten North Florida homeowners whether they need impact windows and you’ll get ten different answers, most of them based on what a neighbor did. The real answer depends on where you live, what your insurance says, and how you feel about hurricane shutters. Here is how we walk customers through it.
What an impact window actually is
An impact-rated window pairs a reinforced frame with laminated glass: two panes bonded to a tough plastic interlayer, the same idea as a car windshield. When debris hits it, the glass may crack but it stays in the frame, so wind and rain can’t get inside and pressurize the house. Ratings are tested to Florida Building Code standards, and the best units are approved for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone even though we don’t live in one.
Do you need them in Gainesville, Ocala or Jacksonville?
Inland Alachua and Marion County are outside the wind-borne debris region, so code does not require impact protection on a replacement. Coastal Duval, St. Johns, Flagler and Nassau are a different story: homes within the wind-borne debris zone must have either impact-rated openings or approved shutters when windows are replaced. Your permit will tell you which side of the line you’re on, and so will we before we quote.
- Coastal (St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, Jacksonville Beach, Fernandina): impact windows are usually the smart choice. They satisfy code, remove the shutter chore, and often earn an insurance credit.
- Inland (Gainesville, Newberry, Ocala, Lake City): optional. Many customers choose impact glass anyway for security, noise reduction and peace of mind during storm season.
- South Georgia: not required, but the same benefits apply.
The benefits beyond hurricanes
- Insurance: Florida insurers must offer wind-mitigation discounts for opening protection. Homeowners commonly see meaningful reductions once every opening is rated, documented with a wind-mitigation inspection.
- Security: laminated glass resists break-ins. It can be struck repeatedly without opening a hole.
- Quiet: the interlayer damps sound noticeably, which is why homes near I-75 or the beach road love them.
- UV protection: laminated glass blocks nearly all ultraviolet light, so floors, furniture and art fade far more slowly.
- No shutters: no ladders, no panels in the garage, no boarding up at 10 p.m. when the cone shifts.
What they cost compared to standard windows
Impact units run higher than standard insulated glass because of the laminated glass and heavier frames. On a whole-home project the premium is often offset over time by insurance savings and the cost of shutters you no longer need. We price both options side by side so you can see the difference for your house rather than an average.
Impact glass on the windows you already like
Impact rating is a glass and frame option, not a separate product line. You can have it on a casement, a single-hung, a picture window or a sliding glass door, in the same colors and grille patterns. See our Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Augustine projects for how they look installed.
